Dr. Heidi Dumreicher is the founder and chief executive officer of the Oikodrom: Institute for Urban Sustainability.
Oikodrom, was founded in the early 90s and has organized and implemented several sustainability projects in
towns, cities and town-hinterland-partnerships. With its broad network of researchers, non-profit-organisations and governmental
entities, it has formulated an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approach to sustainability-issues. Oikodrom, under
Dr. Dumreicher, has not only organised numerous scientific conferences, but also large public events.
In Vienna’s 15th district ( with about 70 000 inhabitants), Oikodrom has initiated a sustainability process and
is continuously working on implementing Local Agenda 21.
With her intensive language knowledge she acts as an intercultural bridge between the participants. Besides her
mother tongue German, she speaks French and Rumanian perfectly, English and Italian in writing and speaking,
Spanish and Portuguese in speaking and has some basic knowledge in Chinese and in Turkish.
In her research-work, Dr. Dumreicher has specialised in integration-work to organise research between different disciplines,
including arts and non-scientific partners. She has been developing innovative sociological methods that consider
data-collection not as mere ethnical procedure, but as part of a participation- and empowerment-processes.
She is also working on a theoretical background for the generation of knowledge. She has presented the results
of her sustainability-research at numerous national and international conferences.
In recent years, she did several fact finding tours in the target countries for the HAMMAM research project in
Turkey, Morocco, Algeria and Egypt and built up most of the project contacts.
